A few of my favorite moments of my grandfather. He taught me a lot about being Christ to others. Over the past three years, I’ve collected a million memories that I wish he was a part of. But what joy comes from knowing he is home! What joy bursts forth knowing he is with our Savior!
When the blizzards came, he drove two hours through snow and storm to get me to work (normally a 15 to 20 minute drive). When the members of his church called, he was there to fix plumbing, shovel driveways, run errands, babysit someone’s child.
He loved his wife well. He honored and respected and led her. What an example he has given me for any relationship - to treat friends, family, peers, and acquaintances with honor, respect, dignity, and the love of God. He made me believe in marriage and steadfastness and God-glorifying relationships.
He taught me a lot about how self-love and self-care will only get you so far, and until you have God-love for who He made you to be and let the Holy Spirit take care of your heart and soul, you can’t get past the reach of self, which has a range only as far as flesh. He taught me how to read my Bible to the glory of God; to plow the driveway of twelve feet of snow to the glory of God; to respect others to the glory of God; to wash dishes to the glory of God; to do good in secret to the glory of God.
Today is that hard, quiet day, with the pang of pain behind memories; however, the pain can never wound and the hard, quiet thoughts can not captivate the mind for long, for we do not grieve as those who have no hope; we do not long for those who fallen asleep in Him, because the trumpets will blast and the heavens will roar and the dead will rise and those alive will be caught up with them in the clouds and we will meet the Lord.
It’s been a long three years, but the memories will remain fond and the lessons learned will be refined and hope will prevail.

Injustice requires our outrage and compassion. Outrage for the wound, compassion for the wounded. We do both.
